Off the Beaten Path – Downtown Smithfield

If you’ve lived in Virginia for many years, when you think of the town of Smithfield the first thing that may come to mind is Smithfield Ham. Mmmm. For me, Smithfield was one of those locations I’d see listed on a road sign on my way to somewhere else. Since moving to Hampton Roads, I’ve started to explore more of the towns that had previously been filling stations or rest stops on my journey. I needed a day away from the normal craziness and decided to take a friend up on her invite to wander the streets of Smithfield. We found ourselves at Smithfield Gourmet Bakery.

We had delicious lemon meringue pie and a custardy bread pudding that melted in my mouth. I would go back JUST to visit that place. How about you? Have you ever visited an off the beaten path city or town that you’d visit again? Comment below with your recommendations. I’m always looking for new places to visit!
